NY Wildlife Rescue

Oscar the Bobcat

Wes and Darcy Laraway have been doing animal rescue (originally llamas and alpacas) for decades, but it soon became apparent to them that the area had a serious need for wildlife rehabilitators. In 2008, therefore, they sought and achieved IRS (501)(c)(3) status and New York Wildlife Rescue Center and Northeast Llama Rescue and Barnyard Sanctuary, Inc became registered charities.

Our volunteers have, between them, permits to rescue almost all classes of wildlife native to New York State, including rabies vector species. Wes is also a falconer and a nuisance wildlife control officer, and he and several of our volunteers are licensed to house non-releasable animals for educational purposes. You can often find Wes and our volunteers at area events, helping people to understand wild animals and how to live responsibly and humanely alongside them.

Our Schedule of Events can be viewed here. (Link opens in separate tab)

The facility is available for select tours, but by appointment only, and the law dictates that wild animals being rehabbed for release are not viewable by the public.

NYWRC has saved everything from tiny songbirds to raptors, from squirrels to bobcats, and more. The cost of rescuing and caring for these animals goes up all the time. Thank you for considering a donation, or one of the other options on our Support page.

NYWRC serves the area in and around Schoharie County, New York. If you are elsewhere in NY State and in need of a wildlife rehabilitator, please visit our good friends at the New York State Wildlife Rehabilitation Council. Their website has a directory of rehabbers throughout the state.

Northeast Llama Rescue

Llama

Northeast Llama Rescue was started by Wes and Darcy Laraway of Middleburgh, NY.

Many years ago they rescued their first llama out of a tiny horse pen. Since that day, Northeast Llama Rescue has helped hundreds of camelids from several different states. The primary mission of Northeast Llama Rescue is to educate owners on how to properly care for their animals.

As often happens with rescue groups, other types of farm animals would also require NELR's assistance. Although the focus is still on llamas and alpacas, NELR saves over 500 animals every year, including the occasional sheep and goats, donkeys and horses, pigs and various types of fowl--and of course, the wildlife through NYWRC.

Please consider visiting our Support page, if you think you would like to lend a hand.

Our rescue work can exist solely because of you, our supporters. The cost to rescue, house, feed, rehabilitate and release or adopt out the animals we save is covered by your donations as well as out of the pockets of our directors and volunteers. Click the "tap to donate" button at the bottom of this site to lend your financial support. In addition, consider joining one of the following programs where, at no additional cost to you, small donations can be sent to NYWRC/NELR each time you shop online. Though each donation is small, they add up -- especially around the holiday season.

If you wish to make a monetary donation and prefer not to use PayPal, you are welcome to mail a check, using our (PDF file) Mail-in Donation Form (or simply send a check to the address on the Contact page).
